Agency: In a historic moment for Bhutanese sports, a NBA exhibition match was held on 3rd August at the Jungshina Multipurpose Complex (JMC), marking the first-ever visit by NBA players to the country. The event was not just about slam dunks and fast breaks—it became a celebration of hope, purpose, and youth empowerment.Their Royal Highnesses Gyalsey Jigme Namgyel and Gyalsey Ugyen Wangchuck graced the basketball showcase which included an exhibition match featuring NBA stars and the Bhutan National Basketball team.
The match, part of the broader Hoops for Happiness initiative, brought together NBA stars, coaches, and more than 150 Bhutanese children from Thimphu and surrounding regions. The atmosphere was electric as young fans watched their heroes in action and later took part in training sessions that went far beyond basketball.
For many of the children, it was their first time witnessing professional players up close. But it was not their height or highlight reels that left the biggest impression, it was their humility and the way they connected with Bhutanese youth.
