The government has announced a new directive mandating the discontinuation of cooking gas LPG supply to households that do not transition to piped natural gas where such connections exist. This move aims to facilitate the expansion of the gas network and decrease reliance on a single fuel source.

On March 25, 2026, the Central Consumer Protection Authority issued a directive prohibiting hotels and restaurants from imposing extra charges, including ‘LPG charges’ and ‘fuel cost recovery’ fees, on consumers. Such practices are classified as unfair trade practices, and non-compliance will result in strict penalties.

Furthermore, officials have reassured the public regarding the sufficiency of petrol, diesel, and LPG supplies in the country, urging citizens to dismiss rumors spreading on social media that may incite panic buying. Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, confirmed that refineries are functioning at full capacity, maintaining adequate crude inventories, and ensuring that sufficient stocks of petrol and diesel are available. Retail outlets continue to operate normally across the nation.
