Since relocating to Australia in 2018, Bhutanese entrepreneur Pema Deki has been on a mission to transform the way the world perceives Himalayan craftsmanship. Through her brand, Eternal Watches, the Trashigang native is bridging the gap between sacred Bhutanese tradition and contemporary horology, creating timepieces that serve as wearable ambassadors of her home country’s identity.

What distinguishes Eternal Watches from the mass-market industry is its focus on “significance over scale.” Each collection—including the ET 087, Royal Green, and the aptly named Thunder Dragon—is produced in limited quantities. This scarcity ensures that each watch remains a collectible item, carrying emotional and cultural weight rather than just functional utility. The design philosophy of Eternal Watches draws deeply from Bhutan’s rich artistic history. Many pieces integrate the Vajra, a sacred symbol representing indestructibility and spiritual power, into minimalist, elegant aesthetics. By reinterpreting centuries-old motifs into modern luxury forms, Deki aims to ensure that Bhutanese culture is recognized as a distinct and sophisticated independent tradition.

“Bhutan has beautiful brands in textiles and handicrafts, but there has never been a commercial watch brand representing our identity on a global stage,” Deki remarked. “Luxury, for us, is about meaning, craftsmanship, and rarity.” While the soul of the brand is Bhutanese, the technical execution is global. The watches are assembled using high-quality Swiss and Japanese components, featuring sapphire crystal glass and surgical-grade stainless steel. This blend of precision engineering and cultural storytelling has resonated particularly well with the Bhutanese diaspora and international collectors who value a narrative behind their purchases.

Building a luxury brand as an independent entrepreneur has required the very resilience Deki credits to her upbringing. Navigating the complexities of global supply chains and building industry trust without massive capital has led to a strategy of intentional, organic growth. Beyond the aesthetics, Eternal Watches seeks to elevate Bhutan’s “artistic depth” in the global luxury conversation. While the kingdom is famous for its philosophy of Gross National Happiness, Deki believes its design sophistication is a story that still needs to be told. Through these timepieces, she offers the world a way to carry the spirit of the Himalayas on their wrists, one second at a time.
