Gelephu Middle Secondary School (GMSS) is setting a strong example of holistic education by integrating yoga, mindfulness, creativity, and community engagement into its learning programmes. Aligned with the Bhutan Baccalaureate Framework, Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) vision, and the principles of Gross National Happiness (GNH), the school is transforming yoga from a physical activity into a powerful tool for personal growth and well-being.

A key driving force behind this initiative is Ms. Sarita Maya Mongar, a distinguished educator and five-time international yoga medallist who represented Bhutan on the Asian stage in 2025. Under her leadership, yoga has been established as an aesthetic domain at GMSS, with weekly sessions focusing on physical fitness, mindfulness, emotional regulation, and self-awareness.

The programme’s impact extends beyond the school through collaborations with Losel Gyatsho Academy and community partners. Awareness sessions, demonstrations, and mindfulness activities have helped educators and students appreciate the value of yoga in supporting focus, resilience, and emotional balance.

GMSS has also played an active role in celebrating the International Day of Yoga in 2025 and 2026, bringing together students, teachers, parents, and community members. Additional initiatives, including winter wellness sessions, leadership-focused yoga programmes, and yoga-themed art activities, have further promoted healthy living and creative expression. Through these efforts, GMSS continues to contribute meaningfully to the vision of Gelephu Mindfulness City by nurturing mindful, resilient, and compassionate future citizens.
