According to local officials, Russia launched a massive attack on Kyiv using ballistic missiles and drones on Saturday night, killing at least three people and injuring more than a dozen others. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko stated in a Telegram post that a five-story residential building in the Solomianskyi district was damaged by falling debris; people are believed to be trapped inside, and a fire has broken out in the courtyard. Klitschko added that people are also trapped in the Shevchenkivskyi district, where parts of the first and second floors of another residential building collapsed. He reported that warehouse buildings in the capital’s Darnytskyi district also caught fire. This attack occurred just two days after a large-scale Russian ballistic missile and drone assault across Ukraine that killed 10 civilians and injured over 50; during that earlier incident, a Russian missile had also entered Polish airspace. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is emphasizing the need for more ‘Patriot anti-ballistic missile defense systems’—in coordination with the US and other Western allies—to counter Russia’s missile attacks. Late Friday, the Ukrainian leader stated that he had spoken with US Vice President-elect JD Vance and discussed the meeting held earlier this week in Washington with President Donald Trump, describing it as “positive and productive.” In a Telegram post on Friday, Zelenskyy said, “Russian air attacks on our country continue, and air defense—specifically interceptors for Patriot systems against ballistic missiles—remains our top priority.” At the NATO summit in Ankara in July, Trump had stated that the US would grant Ukraine a license to manufacture Patriot systems; however, during a cabinet meeting at the presidential retreat at Camp David, Maryland, on Friday, he appeared to backtrack on this promise, stating that he had not yet made a final decision on the matter.
