Bhutan has quietly launched a digital nomad visa program on a pilot basis, targeting tech professionals, freelancers, and entrepreneurs willing to work remotely from the country. The visa allows a stay of up to six months with possible extensions and access to basic internet and coworking hubs in Thimphu and Paro.

This initiative is not only expected to boost tourism and rentals but also inspire similar models in Indian hill states like Sikkim or Himachal Pradesh. Bhutanese officials say the program is designed to balance economic inflow with environmental protection, keeping the visitor footprint low.

Given the rising global trend of location-independent work, Bhutan’s cautious yet modern approach may open new doors for regional collaboration.
