Bhutan has unveiled its new Sustainable Tourism Framework 2025, which includes mandatory eco-certification for all tour operators and a daily visitor impact fee. The new rules aim to control the environmental impact of tourism in fragile mountain ecosystems.
Authorities hope to promote “high-value, low-volume” tourism without compromising on national revenue. Tourists will be encouraged to use electric transport and participate in community-led conservation programs.
The policy is being appreciated in India and Nepal, especially among environmentalists who advocate for similar models in Sikkim and eastern Himalayan regions.
