BT is phasing out its 3G network, requiring 58,000 3G-only users to upgrade to 4G. BICMA has directed telecom operators to implement 3G sunsetting strategically, improving service quality and network coverage. BICMA claims that the change is required since 3G technology is becoming more and more outdated. Repairs and maintenance are challenging since telecom equipment vendors worldwide have ceased creating 3G-compatible devices. Furthermore, 3G capabilities are not being included in the design of contemporary mobile phones. Through the reallocation of frequencies from 3G to more recent technologies that provide faster data rates and improved connectivity, Bhutan is able to make the most of its limited spectrum resources. According to BICMA, 4G and 5G networks enhance overall service reliability, while VoLTE, for example, offers high-definition audio clarity.

Some users experienced connectivity problems as a result of the 3G shutdown, despite efforts to minimize disruptions. In response, BICMA gave BT instructions to put in place a thorough migration plan and temporarily restore 3G in the impacted locations. This entails raising awareness among the general public and making sure that everyone’s transition goes more smoothly. Bhutan is discontinuing its 3G networks in line with the rest of the world. The UK has set a 2033 deadline to phase down both 2G and 3G, while Australia shut down its 3G services in early 2024. Bhutan’s transition to 4G and 5G is expected to enhance digital connectivity, stimulate economic growth, and prepare the nation for future technological advancements.
