Bhutan’s Prime Minister, Tshering Tobgay, acknowledged the country’s aging population as progress, but warned of potential challenges if demographic trends persist. He emphasized proactive measures in social protection, healthcare, and infrastructure. Bhutan’s healthcare system and the vision of the Kings have led to a rise in elderly numbers, resulting in a 72-year life expectancy. However, fertility rates have dropped, and the population is not keeping pace.
The decline in young people will exacerbate the challenges of caring for the expanding elderly demographic. Despite these challenges, the King’s support ensures senior citizens are not left behind. The Bhutanese government has introduced four key initiatives, including the National Senior Citizens Policy, a policy for disabled people, a rural life insurance scheme, and a sustainable development plan. However, the government has no plans to establish similar old age homes, unlike in other countries where such facilities are typically privately run.
