Bhutan is set to launch a new nationwide electric vehicle (EV) subsidy program by October 2025, aimed at reducing carbon emissions and fossil fuel dependency. The scheme will provide up to 50% subsidies on EV purchases for individual buyers and taxi operators.

The government has also signed an MoU with Indian EV manufacturers like Tata Motors and Mahindra to ensure affordable vehicle availability. Charging stations will be installed across major towns including Thimphu, Phuentsholing, and Paro.

This development opens up cross-border EV trade opportunities with North Bengal and Northeast India, where infrastructure for EVs is being simultaneously developed. Environmentalists in Siliguri and Cooch Behar are optimistic about shared sustainability goals.
