The Bhutanese government is implementing the National Digital Strategy, aiming for digital modernisation and efficient governance. The strategy aims for a thriving digital economy, inclusive society, and efficient systems. The NDS is prioritizing digital governance, investing Nu 5.15 billion in a National eService Portal and upgrading its call center, integrating Robotic Process Automation and AI/ML technologies. GovTech suggests RPA and Al/ML can automate routine tasks, reduce civil service size, and improve efficiency, as demonstrated in tax administration, reducing manual effort, errors, and compliance.
According to the Gov Tech official, there are now delays, mistakes, and inefficiencies caused by tax officers manually verifying, classifying, and entering physical copies of tax forms, bills, and invoices that taxpayers submit into the system. Gov Tech is giving data-driven decision-making top priority across all government agencies in order to implement smart governance. In order to move away from reactive methods and towards proactive decision-making and strategic planning, this entails strategically utilising current systems and data to assess trends.
