Punakha, one of Bhutan’s most visited districts, is set to welcome its first dedicated craft market, strengthening opportunities for local artisans and enhancing the visitor experience. Despite its rich cultural heritage and popularity among tourists, the district has so far lacked a central space for showcasing indigenous handicrafts.
The craft market, currently over 20 percent complete, is being constructed near the Khuruthang Kaja Throm under the Economic Stimulus Programmed. The project is implemented by the Department of Media, Creative Industry and Intellectual Property in collaboration with the Punakha District Administration. The ground-breaking ceremony was held in February last year.
Designed in traditional Bhutanese architectural style, the market will feature 27 structures built with rammed-earth walls and wooden elements. Once completed by June 2026, it will provide a dedicated platform for locally produced handicrafts, helping reduce reliance on imported goods and support homegrown creative industries.
With an estimated budget of Nu 48 million, the initiative aims to promote authentic Bhutanese craftsmanship while creating a convenient, single location for visitors to explore and purchase local products. The market is expected to further strengthen Punakha’s position as a key cultural and tourism hub.
