Bhutan’s Prime Minister, Tshering Tobgay, has launched a “Bhutan 21st Century Economic Roadmap:10X National Economic Vision” to achieve a tenfold increase in GDP by 2050. Bhutan’s President, Lyonchhen, has confirmed the achievability of a roadmap to address youth unemployment and promote economic growth, urging all sectors to take ownership of Bhutan’s future. India’s 10X National Economic Vision aims for private sector leadership, hydropower, agriculture, and tourism to contribute at least 60% of GDP by 2050, with collaborations with multilateral agencies and the Indian government. With more than 75% of its output being organic, the agriculture sector hopes to contribute 3-4% of GDP, while the tourism sector hopes to create over 80,000 employment and contribute 10-15% of GDP.
By 2050, it is anticipated that emerging sectors such the digital economy, sophisticated manufacturing, energy, wellness and education services, sustainable mining, and mineral processing will account for 30–50% of the GDP. Lyonchhen emphasized Bhutan’s distinct advantages, saying that its environment, culture, strong governance, and the “Brand Bhutan” is based on peace, prosperity, and Gross National Happiness—are all essential for realizing its aspirational 10X goal for a wealthy, competitive, and sustainable future. To promote implementation, track advancement, and facilitate interagency coordination, a Vision Delivery Unit will be formed under the Prime Minister’s Office’s Office of Cabinet Affairs and Strategic Coordination.
