Bhutan has launched its first green hydrogen pilot plant in Gelephu, a major step towards carbon neutrality and energy independence. Built with technical support from India’s NTPC and funded partly by the Asian Development Bank, the plant uses hydropower to produce hydrogen fuel.

Green hydrogen will be tested for use in public buses and industrial heating. Bhutan plans to export hydrogen to neighbouring Indian states within five years.

This project aligns with India’s National Hydrogen Mission and Bangladesh’s emerging interest in alternative fuels. The collaboration opens doors for a sub-regional green energy corridor in the eastern Himalayas.
