The Lawyers’ Canteen at the Delhi High Court has announced a temporary halt on the serving of main course food items due to a shortage of LPG gas cylinders, as outlined in a notice issued by the canteen management on March 11. The notice explained that the unavailability of LPG has hindered the ability to prepare cooked meals, stating, “This is to respectfully inform you that due to the unavailability of the LPG gas cylinder at present, we regret that we are unable to prepare and serve the main course items in the Lawyers Canteen.”
Furthermore, the management noted the lack of information regarding the timeline for the restoration of gas supplies, saying, “At the moment, we do not have any information regarding when the LPG supply will be restored. We will resume the preparation of the main course as soon as the gas supply becomes available.” Despite the suspension of cooked meals, the canteen assured that several food items that do not require cooking, such as sandwiches, salads, and fruit chaats, will still be available for service.
The notice, signed by Sandeep Sharma from the Lawyers’ Canteen, included an apology for the disruption and requested understanding and cooperation from advocates and court staff. This LPG shortage is reportedly associated with disruptions in supply chains resulting from ongoing tensions and conflicts in West Asia, particularly the involvement of the United States, Israel, and Iran, which have affected fuel logistics in certain regions of India. In light of these developments, the Central Government has invoked the Essential Commodities Act to regulate the supply of natural gas, responding to the crisis in West Asia and the blockade at the Hormuz Strait.
