Bhutan has launched its most ambitious agricultural project yet—an Organic Agro-Corridor in the east, covering over 1,200 hectares across Trashigang, Mongar, and Samdrup Jongkhar.

The initiative will provide subsidies, export support, and certification services to farmers willing to transition entirely to chemical-free agriculture. Key export targets include India’s northeastern states and organic retailers in Bangladesh.

Bhutan’s Ministry of Agriculture said this model could serve as a template for sustainable Himalayan agriculture, and promote cross-border green trade with Bangladesh and India. Indian organic exporters in North Bengal and Assam have welcomed the move.
