Gelephu residents are preparing for the monsoon season with flood control measures, including scour protection, gabion walls, riprap, and gabion walls along major riverbanks. Nu 330.2 million project, jointly funded by the Royal Government and Invest International, is being executed by Wangs Private Limited, supervised by the Gelephu Thromde administration. Sarpang’s rivers, except the Maochhu, are seasonal but critical flood hazard zones, posing risks to settlements, farmland, and infrastructure, despite government efforts.
Riverbed sediments dredged from the Shetikhari Stream are being used to fill trenches along the projected 3.5 kilometer Royal Boulevard road in Gelephu Thromde in an effort to maximize efficiency and cut expenses. In the extended thromde, the same materials are also being used to level the soil surrounding access roads and Industrial Service Centers. According to Thrompon Tshering Norbu, more than 5,000 truckloads of these dredged materials have already been used in a positive way. The flood control project creates the essential foundation for a more secure and resilient cityscape as Gelephu establishes itself as a potential regional center.
