India and Bhutan have pledged to enhance collaboration regarding trans-boundary rivers and hydropower initiatives following a high-level meeting in Thimphu. The Indian delegation, led by V. L. Kantha Rao, Secretary of the Department of Water Resources within the Ministry of Jal Shakti, included officials from Assam, West Bengal, and WAPCOS Ltd. Key discussions revolved around flood management, forecasting, and the ongoing progress of the Punatsangchhu-I Hydro Electric Project, which is being developed in conjunction with the Government of India.

During the meeting, both parties reviewed existing mechanisms for data sharing related to hydro-meteorological observations. They also investigated methods to modernize monitoring systems, enhance capacity building, and confront climate change challenges, particularly glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs). The Secretary’s itinerary included a visit to the newly commissioned Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project, where he met with Bhutan’s Energy and Natural Resources Minister, Lyonpo Gem Tshering.

Overall, the visit underscored the shared commitment of India and Bhutan to sustainably and mutually beneficially manage their trans-boundary water resources.
