On Thursday, a fire broke out at the ATS in Phuentsholing, destroying 96 units. Fortunately, no casualties were reported. The fire began at 12:30pm and is believed to have been caused by an electrical short circuit. The fire was completely out at 2:20pm. Mopping-up procedures are now beginning. PM Tshering Tobgay went to the site yesterday to talk with the affected families. According to Phuentsholing Thrompon Uttar Kumar Rai, the Thromde is giving shelter, meals, and essential supplies to affected households for the next ten days. Of the evacuated families, 33 were put in vacant ATS units, 20 in school classrooms, and 43 sought refuge with friends and family.
Later, the disassembled structures caught fire. Additionally, 28 vehicles were slightly damaged, and a Maruti van was destroyed. Police, firefighters, the army, desuups, and local citizens worked together to put out the fire, utilizing equipment given by private companies. Most of the impacted households have lost all of their possessions. The majority of the families are low-income, and donations are being asked to help them. There were 1,999 households from Bhutan living over the border, totaling over 5,000 people. The prefabricated shelters, erected in record time, contained two rooms, a kitchen, and a toilet, and served as temporary dwellings for Bhutanese who had been living across the border before the gates were closed.
