RENEW documented 2,536 cases over the previous five years. Among the cases were non-domestic, gender-based, sexual, emotional, physical, and financial abuses. There were forty cases involving human trafficking and seven involving child custody. Around 1,105 cases of emotional abuse were reported during that time, which was followed by 440 cases of physical abuse, 295 cases of economic abuse, and 78 cases of sexual abuse. According to the senior counselor at RENEW, verbal abuse, bullying, harassment, and exploitation are examples of non-physical behaviors that are included in cases of emotional abuse. In 2023, RENEW reported 788 cases of abuse and violence, the most in the previous five years. The number of physical abuse cases dropped from 132 in 2023 to 102 in 2024, but the number of sexual abuse cases significantly increased.
47.5% of women aged 55-59 and 46.8% of women aged 60-64 thought that violence could be justified, according to the 2023 National Health Survey. The results of the survey showed that women in rural regions accepted violence at a higher rate than women in urban areas. Education was also very important. While women with a bachelor’s degree or more had a lower acceptance rate of 32.8%, those without formal education had a 47.7% acceptance rate for some forms of violence. RENEW documented 13 walk-in cases in 2024, including 10 from people with disabilities and 3 from members of the LGBTQIA+ community. For the first time in five years, RENEW has documented cases from a variety of people.
