For many farmers in Maedgang, under Norbuang gewog in Samtse, raising poultry and pigs has become their main source of income. Since raising pigs and poultry has proven to be a steady source of revenue for local farmers, many households have expanded their operations by managing larger farms and investing in animal barns. Villagers actively supply neighboring towns with pork and chicken, and some also supply piglets to other neighboring places. People can better manage their everyday financial needs thanks to the markets’ simple accessibility. Farmer Subash Poudel, who raises pigs and poultry, said that he has been running his commercial farm for 15 years, following in his father’s footsteps. He is building a new facility to house 300 more chickens, and he now has roughly 700 birds and 100 pigs.

Subash Poudel, Budhi Man Rai, and others supply piglets and chickens to farmers in Dagana and Gelephu, despite market concerns and inconsistent productivity. A 51-year-old cattle farmer with roughly 15 years of experience, Pralad Chetteri, discovered that his two-year endeavor with layer chickens had not been profitable. “Piggery and poultry offer a relatively quick turnaround, ensuring a steady flow of income,” Pralad Chetteri noted. Yog Raj Ghalley, the Dramzegang-Maedgang Tshogpa, claims that about half of the 65 houses in Maedgang are engaged in pig or poultry farming, indicating the extent of livestock husbandry in the region.
