In a historic step toward mental health awareness, Bhutan’s Ministry of Health has launched its first nationwide mental health helpline, operational 24/7. The helpline aims to provide support for anxiety, depression, substance abuse, and suicide prevention, particularly in rural and high-altitude areas.
The initiative is part of Bhutan’s broader plan under the Gross National Happiness Index, which now includes mental wellness as a key indicator. Trained counselors are available in both Dzongkha and English, with future plans to add Nepali and Sharchopkha.
Indian Himalayan states like Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh, along with Nepal’s mountain provinces, are watching the rollout with interest, considering similar models to reach isolated communities facing mental health stigma.
