The Fifth International Vajrayana Conference in Thimphu focused on science, meditation, and mindfulness, promoting dialogue between spiritual wisdom and scientific research. Over 400 participants attended a conference on the Vajrayana tradition, discussing its transformative potential in meditation and the Buddha’s teachings, including Sutrayana and Mantrayana paths. The Dorji Lopen emphasized that in order to meditate effectively, one must rid one’s body, voice, and mind of harmful influences. Discussions on a variety of topics were covered on the first day of the conference, such as the connection between AI and contemplative practices, neuroscience and meditation the possibility of Dharma transmission via AI.Even though a number of topics were covered, AI dominated most of the discussion.
Most participants concurred that AI cannot govern people or their actions because it lacks fundamental human characteristics including consciousness, emotion, compassion, and moral intention. However, other speakers raised the possibility that future developments might give AI certain characteristics that humans share. In 2016, the inaugural International Vajrayana Conference took place. Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay discussed the value of meditation in the modern environment while addressing the audience at the pre-conference ceremony on June 2. The Prime Minister pointed out that although more complex meditation techniques are reserved for skilled practitioners, lay practitioners can benefit from basic methods like peaceful abiding meditation. This week’s conference is still going strong, encouraging interdisciplinary discussions that connect traditional wisdom with contemporary understanding.
