The United States has announced a potential temporary easing of sanctions on certain Russian crude oil to stabilize global energy markets, while commending India for adhering to previous restrictions on sanctioned oil purchases. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent disclosed that a 30-day waiver has been granted, allowing Indian refiners to purchase Russian oil that is already in transit, following growing supply pressures in global energy markets amid escalating tensions in West Asia. The reasoning behind this decision is to prevent short-term disruptions in global oil supplies.
Bessent noted the cooperation of India regarding the sanctions, stating, “The Indians had been very good actors,” and acknowledged their plan to substitute previously sanctioned Russian oil with US oil. However, to mitigate the immediate oil supply gap worldwide, the US has permitted certain Russian oil purchases. He indicated that a significant amount of sanctioned Russian crude remains stranded on vessels, and allowing these shipments to be sold could substantially enhance global oil supply.
Additionally, US Energy Secretary Chris Wright supported this initiative, urging India to refine the oil already on vessels around Southern Asia and quickly integrate it into the market. He emphasized the implementation of short-term measures aimed at keeping oil prices down and ensuring a steady supply amidst ongoing geopolitical conflict. Both officials reinforced that Washington would continue to consider further measures to alleviate market pressures as the situation develops.
