Bhutan aims to transform its honey sector into a sustainable, globally recognized apiculture industry by 2030, producing premium-quality natural products for export markets. Bhutan’s 13th Plan and 2034 Strategy prioritize high-value export-oriented products like honey, focusing on Dubai, Singapore, Bangkok, Delhi, Japan, Germany, and Australia, with trade talks accelerating. Dzongkhag honey production declined from 16.7 MT in 2013 to 41.8 MT in 2023, with honey output increasing by 12%.
UNDP grants, government support, and queen bee rearing efforts are crucial. Dr. Jambay Dorjee presented the 13th Plan’s Apiculture Strategy, aiming for 83 million tons of high-value honey production by 2029. The plan includes 5,000 beekeepers, enterprise development, research, and institutional linkages. Promoting apiculture improves Bhutan’s food security, biodiversity, and ecological balance.
