A deeply personal tribute inspired by gratitude for Bhutan’s Monarchs has earned international recognition, bringing global attention to the country’s unique relationship with its Monarchy. What began as one Bhutanese man’s heartfelt expression of respect has grown into a world-record-holding initiative that celebrates the Kings’ enduring service and leadership.
Using his personal savings, Sonam Tshering completed the Temple of Monarch in Babesa, Thimphu, in late 2025. Described as the world’s first temple dedicated to living Monarchs, it features portraits of Bhutan’s Kings alongside the National Flag, symbolising the nation’s deep respect and loyalty to the institution of the Monarchy.
Built over four months, largely during evenings and weekends, the project reflects Sonam’s appreciation for the sacrifices and service of the Monarchs. Earlier this year, the Temple of Monarch received international recognition from the Book of World Records as the World’s Largest Tribute to Living Monarchs. It was also recognised by the Global Best of Records and the Asian Book of World Records. Sonam said the verification process involved answering more than 500 questions because the category had never existed before.
The initiative also received the Golden International Award for Arts, Culture and Creative Impact. While the temple has welcomed visitors and generated global media attention, Sonam emphasised that it was never intended as a tourist attraction but as a lasting tribute to Bhutan’s beloved Monarchs.
