Bhutan has inaugurated its first electric vehicle (EV) assembly plant in Paro, in partnership with a South Korean automobile firm. The facility will initially produce 5,000 EVs annually, with plans to expand exports to India, Nepal, and Bangladesh.

Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay called it a “historic moment” that aligns with Bhutan’s vision to become carbon neutral. The EVs are designed to suit rugged Himalayan terrain and are priced affordably for regional markets.

The plant also creates employment opportunities for Bhutanese youth and reduces dependence on imported fuel. South Asian nations eyeing sustainable transport are closely watching Bhutan’s pioneering move.
