Two months after the relocation for the Gelephu International Airport project began, affected residents in the area received monetary compensation for their standing properties. The compensation was disbursed after residents opened DK Bank accounts. The properties were valued in accordance with prevailing government norms, based on the BSR and LCR. The compensation was generous and fair, with residents like Madhab Adhikari, who moved to a temporary hut, stating that the compensation was more than what they had spent on constructing the structures. Other residents, like Tulasi Kumari Jogini, received compensation for their single-storey concrete homes built two years ago, while others received compensation for their structures. Compensation was paid equally for immature and broken areca nut plants and non-bearing fruit tree saplings.
Rup Narayan Ghimirey and Southern Seedling Nursery received compensation for their properties, including areca nut trees and fodder. The local government respects the rights of claimants and established a grievance redressal unit to address concerns. Reusable materials were allowed for some structures, but not for others. GMC allows reusable materials for cowshed construction, deducts outstanding loans, suspends payments, and offers relief for unpaid loans. 124 residential structures relocated for airport runway development.
