The Taj Hotels brand has returned to Bhutan’s hospitality landscape after a two-year pause, launching two luxury resorts in the Himalayan kingdom and re-establishing its presence in the country’s high-end tourism sector.
Operated by its parent company, Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), the new properties—Taj Paro Resort & Spa and Taj Gangtey Resort & Spa—opened in December 2025 and January 2026, respectively.
Located in the scenic Paro Valley, Taj Paro Resort & Spa features 45 rooms set across a 7.6-acre estate. The resort is designed to blend with its natural surroundings and offers views of the iconic Tiger’s Nest Monastery. Built using local stone and reclaimed wood by Bhutanese artisans, the property reflects traditional Bhutanese architecture while incorporating modern luxury and comfort.
The second property, Taj Gangtey Resort & Spa, is situated in the pristine Phobjikha Valley and offers 35 rooms. Built on elevated terrain to minimize environmental impact on the valley floor, the resort provides sweeping views of the nearby Black‑necked Crane Sanctuary. Its design emphasizes sustainability, featuring warm timber interiors, large panoramic windows, and open spaces that connect guests with the valley’s meadows and forests.
With these openings, Taj now operates two primary branded hotels in Bhutan as of 2026. A third property in the country is managed by IHCL under a different brand.
The company’s presence in Bhutan had undergone a significant shift in 2023 when the well-known Taj Tashi in Thimphu ended its partnership with Taj and was later rebranded as Pemako Thimphu.
According to current booking rates for mid-April 2026, both newly opened resorts are positioned in the luxury segment, with room tariffs starting at premium price points reflecting Bhutan’s exclusive tourism model.
