Bhutan has honoured Prime Minister Narendra Modi by dedicating a sacred Buddhist stupa to him, recognising his commitment and India’s support for the Gelephu Mindfulness City project. Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck dedicated the 76th stupa, also known as Jangchub Chorten, following the construction of 108 stupas at Gelephu on November 1.

Prime Minister Modi expressed gratitude to the Bhutanese King and people, saying the gesture reflected the shared spiritual heritage and longstanding friendship between the two nations. He accepted the honour on behalf of the people of India.

The dedication ceremony was attended by Union Minister Kiren Rijiju, who joined the King in unveiling a plaque at the site. More than 40,000 volunteers, monks and artisans participated in constructing the 108 stupas within six hours. The ceremony was organised during Lhabab Duchen, an important Buddhist festival.

Bhutan’s King, Queen Gyaltsuen and Prime Minister Dasho Tshering Tobgay were also present at the event.

The Gelephu Mindfulness City project is a major initiative aimed at combining Bhutan’s spiritual traditions, Gross National Happiness philosophy and modern economic development.

The special dedication highlights the strong relationship between India and Bhutan. It also reflects India’s support for Bhutan’s development plans and the importance of their shared cultural and spiritual connections.
