Bhutan and the European Parliament recently concluded their ninth Inter-Parliamentary Meeting in the Kingdom, bringing together Bhutanese lawmakers and a five-member European Parliament delegation led by Serban Dimitrie Sturdza, Chair of the Delegation for Relations with the Countries of South Asia, to deliberate on vital bilateral cooperation areas encompassing climate resilience, renewable energy, education, water-resource management, and digital transformation. During the high-level discussions, Bhutanese representatives underscored the country’s severe vulnerability to environmental threats, urgently highlighting the pressing need for accessible adaptation finance, robust infrastructure, and enhanced international support as the nation confronts escalating climate risks and strives to maintain its unique ecological balance. In response, the European Parliament delegation reaffirmed the EU’s steadfast commitment through its comprehensive Multiannual Indicative Programme for 2021-2027, which delivers essential grant funding and specialized technical assistance designed to empower Bhutan in achieving sustainable socio-economic development, long-term economic self-reliance, and a smooth graduation from its Least Developed Country status. The visiting European delegates also highlighted their firsthand site visits to several EU-supported initiatives across the Kingdom, praising the tangible positive impacts of these collaborative projects on local communities and emphasizing the vital role of ongoing partnerships in facilitating Bhutan’s ambitious transition toward a low-carbon, green economy. Furthermore, the talks explored avenues for private sector engagement, skills development, social policy modernization, and institutional capacity building, with European representatives noting that while direct financial investments must stem from private entities, the strategic public grants provided by the Union continue to be deeply appreciated and impactful. Concluding on a positive note, the inter-parliamentary session successfully reaffirmed the enduring strength of EU-Bhutan diplomatic relations, underscoring the indispensable value of parliamentary dialogue, mutual learning, and shared best practices in navigating global challenges such as climate change and sustainable development.
