Bhutan head coach Gary Phillips has expressed confidence in his team’s chances ahead of their opening match against hosts Bangladesh in the Techno SAFF Championship, despite facing difficulties in their preparations.

The two teams are scheduled to meet at the National Stadium on Thursday. Speaking at Wednesday’s pre-match press conference at a local hotel, Phillips explained that the domestic league schedule during the recent FIFA international window disrupted Bhutan’s preparations. The situation made it difficult for the coaching staff to bring the players together early and ensure sufficient training time.

The Bhutanese squad includes several young and relatively inexperienced players, giving the coaching staff an opportunity to assess emerging talents. Phillips believes the tournament will provide valuable exposure for these players as Bhutan look towards future major qualifying competitions.

Despite having less preparation time than some of their competitors, the coach remains optimistic about his team’s prospects. He acknowledged that facing Bangladesh on their home ground would be a difficult challenge but stressed the importance of making the most of the opportunity.

Phillips also highlighted Bhutan’s commitment to developing domestic football. The squad consists entirely of locally based players who will represent their nation with pride. The championship offers them an important platform to gain international experience and contribute to the continued development of Bhutanese football.
