European Union ambassadors have expressed strong optimism about Nepal’s future following a high-level meeting with Prime Minister Balendra (Balen) Shah at Singha Durbar. Speaking collectively after the meeting, the diplomats said Nepal is entering a promising new phase marked by democratic change, reform and economic opportunity.
Swedish Ambassador Jan Theseleff remarked that “it is time for Nepal,” highlighting the positive momentum the country has gained in recent months. He noted similarities between Sweden and Nepal, particularly in tourism and mountain-based economies, and expressed confidence in stronger bilateral cooperation.
Italian Ambassador Antonio Enrico Bartoli praised Nepal’s democratic transformation and said the country possesses immense potential if guided effectively. He stressed Italy’s interest in supporting Nepal in tourism, hydropower and scientific machinery.
Estonian Ambassador Marje Luup emphasised cooperation in information technology, e-governance and cybersecurity, while Austrian Ambassador Robert Zischg highlighted opportunities in tourism and cultural heritage preservation.
Cyprus Ambassador Evagoras Vryonides pointed to the growing Nepali community in Cyprus and called for reforms to reduce excessive recruitment costs faced by Nepali workers. Netherlands Ambassador Marisa Gerards praised the Nepal government’s focus on good governance, economic reform and youth opportunities, stating that the administration appears determined to deliver visible results within its first 100 days.
EU Ambassador Véronique Lorenzo stressed the importance of stronger people-to-people ties as increasing numbers of Nepali students and workers move to Europe. She also noted that the EU is keen to support Nepal’s private sector and reform agenda.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Shah reaffirmed Nepal’s commitment to a balanced and pragmatic foreign policy based on mutual respect, democratic values and political stability.
