Plans to establish Kanglung in Trashigang as an education centre remain stalled nearly a decade after the initiative was first announced. The project, pledged by the People’s Democratic Party during its terms in government, has not been included among the priorities of the 13th Five-Year Plan. Education and Skills Development Minister Yeezang De Thapa said the ministry could not prioritise the project due to other commitments under the current plan. The proposal was first announced in 2014, with Kanglung identified as an education hub because of its existing institutions, favourable climate and proximity to a domestic airport. Residents say the prolonged uncertainty is affecting property development and local businesses, while some fear existing plans and land maps could become outdated as construction increases. The proposed centre was expected to boost the local economy, create jobs and attract visitors. The district administration had also developed a water supply project in preparation for the initiative. With Sherubtse College reducing student intake and several houses remaining vacant, residents are increasingly concerned about Kanglung’s future. They are now calling for clear government direction on whether and when the education centre will be established.
