The Buddha Dordenma, one of Bhutan’s most recognisable religious and tourist landmarks, is undergoing its first major re-gilding since its completion in 2015. Scaffolding is currently being installed around the 201-foot statue, with re-gilding work expected to begin once the structure is complete. Gold leaf will be applied to the statue’s face, while the remaining surface will receive a pressurised gold spray coating designed to last for around 15 years. Years of exposure to sunlight, wind and rain have caused parts of the existing gold finish to fade and develop a greyish appearance, making maintenance necessary. The project is being carried out jointly by the government and the Central Monastic Body at an estimated cost of Nu 85 million. Beyond restoring the monument’s appearance, the project is regarded as a significant religious and cultural undertaking, with the re-gilding being conducted as a tribute to His Majesty The King and for the long life of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo. The Buddha Dordenma remains an important site for religious gatherings, prayers and ceremonies attended by thousands of devotees, while also attracting visitors from around the world. Members of the public can contribute gold or money towards the project through a committee established by the government and the Central Monastic Body. The re-gilding is expected to be completed by the end of October. Tourists will continue to have access to the site, although entry into the temple will remain restricted until the work is finished. Once completed, the project is expected to restore the Buddha Dordenma’s distinctive golden appearance and preserve the landmark for devotees and visitors for years to come.
