Bhutan has officially extended its USD 100 nightly Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) for international tourists through December 31, 2029, offering travel operators and prospective visitors long-term certainty for itinerary planning. Originally scheduled to expire on August 31, 2027, the extension maintains the effective fee structure for an additional two years and four months without returning to the former USD 200 rate. Initially introduced on September 1, 2023, as a 50 percent discount to spur post-pandemic tourism recovery, employment, and foreign currency earnings, the USD 100 levy remains an essential component of Bhutan’s “high value, low volume” tourism framework. The nightly fee applies specifically to US dollar-paying international tourists—excluding Indian nationals who operate under a separate pricing structure—and is billed separately from core travel expenses such as lodging, meals, transport, guides, and visa application fees. By locking in the fee structure through 2029, the Bhutanese government provides crucial price stability for long-haul tour operators and international travel partners who design packages years in advance. Collected directly by the government, SDF revenues are funneled into vital national initiatives, including environmental conservation, cultural preservation, infrastructure enhancements, free healthcare, and education. The extension balances affordable access for global travelers while maintaining a steady revenue stream to finance sustainable development and community welfare across the kingdom.
