Gelephu is making final preparations for Project 108, with over 200,000 people anticipated to gather in Gelephu Mindfulness City on November 1, 2026, to mark the completion of 108 Jangchub Chortens. King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, Queen Jetsun Pema, their children, prominent Buddhist teachers, and international guests are present alongside visitors from across Bhutan for the momentous occasion, which coincides with the Descending Day of the Buddha. Each 15-metre-high Stupa of Enlightenment stands 108 metres apart along a 12-kilometre corridor by the Mao Chhu, built by trained construction teams while public visitors observe from designated areas through prayer. To support the massive influx of attendees and manage local traffic, Gelephu has introduced extensive transit arrangements, deploying over 130 buses and more than 1,600 volunteer taxis offering free transport across 18 bus terminals and 34 taxi stands in Gelephu, Sarpang, Umling, and Chhuzergang. Public bus services will start operating from 12:30 am on the main event day, with dedicated staff on every vehicle for crowd assistance, followed by morning and evening schedules on November 2, 3, and 4. Specialized transit support is provided for seniors over 65 and individuals with disabilities, ensuring drop-offs closer to public gathering areas alongside caregivers. Private vehicle access in Gelephu will be restricted, requiring drivers to park at designated lots and rely on free shuttle services, while international visitors traveling via Assam can access the event through the temporary Hatisar immigration post. Spiritual preparations for all 108 construction sites are now complete following extensive monastic rites led by Bhutan’s Je Khenpo, who presided over the Sri-Non ritual on October 28 to subdue harmful influences and consecrate the land, following a three-day Sri Drub prayer ceremony at Sarpang Dzong supported by 50 senior ritual masters.
