The Lungta Art Festival 2026 currently underway at the VAST Bhutan Art Centre in Thimphu has successfully brought traditional Bhutanese weaving and contemporary artistic expression into a unique shared space through an inspiring exhibition by contemporary artist Kunzang Wangmo titled Tendrel, which features thirty-five distinct artworks seamlessly paired with delicate handwoven fabric created by her dedicated 83-year-old mother-in-law, who continues to weave traditional Kiras every single morning despite facing physical challenges related to her eyesight and hearing, thereby creating a profound dialogue between generations where Wangmo integrates the fragile beauty of aged craftsmanship with her own contemporary drawings and paintings to symbolize interdependence, connection, and the harmonious blending of heritage and modern creativity, reflecting an artistic journey that began during her childhood when she watched her father draw architectural house designs and gained early recognition in a 2006 open art competition, which has now culminated in interactive pieces exploring the elusive nature of the human mind through hidden details that emerge under light, offering visitors a deeper conceptual layer that mirrors the festival’s overarching ethos while showcasing the growing appreciation for contemporary art among Bhutanese audiences as eight talented local artists present their solo exhibitions through next month.
