Three international construction firms are set to undertake the Gelephu-Tareythang highway project in Sarpang, requiring joint ventures or sub-consultants to promote local engagement and capacity building. The World Bank-supported project, which includes four major bridges over the Mau, Jengkhurung-Taklai, Langer, and Singye rivers, includes participation from national contractors with international experience. Eligible contractors worldwide can participate in the International Market Approach bidding process, with contracts awarded through competitive bidding, with same procurement criteria for both international and local firms.

Key criteria for contract evaluation include turnover, construction experience, credit facilities, human resources, sustainability, innovation, supply chain, and quality control plans, as mandated by the World Bank. The World Bank’s procurement rules mandate that projects exceeding USD 1.5 million in Bhutan follow the International Market Approach, including the construction of the Gelephu-Tareythang road and bridges. The Bhutanese highway project, a major construction project, offers opportunities for skill transfer, local contractor participation, and collaboration between international and domestic firms.
