The government has launched the seventh phase of the Rural Connectivity Programme to improve mobile and internet access in remote communities by November 2026. Minister Namgyal Dorji plans to connect 17 villages and 255 households across the country, including highland communities, through a network service programme. Bhutan’s minister highlighted the Druk Speed Test mobile app for internet speed assessment. MPs raised concerns about public safety in uninhabited areas, suggesting detailed reports and telecom company-government meetings. Minister of Energy and Natural Resources responded to the proposal to give Highlanders satellite phones.

According to Gem Tshering, in order to maintain safety throughout the cordyceps collecting season, satellite phones have only been provided to forest officials thus far, depending on the volume of collectors. He said that because of official registration procedures and related security considerations, they were never made available to the general public. Members overwhelmingly endorsed the petition, emphasizing the pressing need for better digital connectivity in a society that is becoming more and more reliant on technology. Good Governance Committee has been instructed by the House to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and provide its recommendations during the next Winter Session.
