In a significant push for sustainable agriculture, Bhutan has launched its National Millet Mission to increase cultivation of millet across rural areas. The initiative was inaugurated by Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay in Trashigang district.
The mission aims to revive traditional farming, enhance climate resilience, and reduce reliance on imported grains. Agricultural subsidies, free seeds, and farmer training are part of the multi-year plan.
“Millet is part of our heritage and our future,” said Agriculture Minister Yeshey Penjor. Bhutan aims to export value-added millet products to India and other neighbouring countries, potentially opening up new economic avenues.
This development also resonates with India’s Year of Millets campaign and aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, making Bhutan a regional example of agro-innovation.
