Haa’s long-established automobile workshops are set to relocate from the town centre to a new site in Tshilongkha, about five kilometres from town, as part of the Haa Local Area Plan 2018. The designated site, covering more than four acres, will accommodate 13 businesses, including automobile workshops, car washing and fabrication facilities. The relocation, first discussed in 2020, is expected to reduce congestion, noise and pollution while creating a more organised space for automobile-related businesses. Several operators have already begun construction, with the new hub expected to be operational by October. However, workshop owners have raised concerns that the additional distance could reduce business in a small market with relatively few vehicles. For some long-established operators, the move also threatens their livelihoods after decades of running businesses in town. Others have welcomed the decision while expressing concerns about potential flooding at the new site. The engineering sector says an initial flood assessment found no immediate threat because of existing protective structures, while longer-term mitigation measures will be considered with relevant agencies. As Haa prepares for a dedicated automobile hub, workshop owners and authorities will face the challenge of balancing better town planning with the economic realities of sustaining small businesses.
