Many bus stops in Thimphu lack proper shelters, seating and safe waiting areas, causing difficulties for daily commuters, especially students and elderly passengers. The capital has around 320 bus stops, but only about 88 have shelters. At several locations, passengers are forced to wait along roadsides, exposing them to rain, cold, strong sunlight and traffic risks.
Newer bus stops in areas such as Changzamtog, Ngabiphu and Changlimathang offer better facilities, including lighting and CCTV cameras. The City Bus Service says it plans to improve and renovate bus stops, but limited funding remains a major challenge. Authorities are also aligning future bus-stop development with the planned Babesa–CSI Changzamtog expressway project.
With around 25,000 people using city buses daily, commuters are urging authorities to provide safer and more comfortable waiting facilities across Thimphu.
