Merak Gewog in Trashigang has strengthened its fire preparedness with the installation of a new firefighting water supply system and 35 fire hydrants across three chiwogs. The project, completed in June, includes a reservoir tank and pipelines designed to provide immediate access to water during fire emergencies. More than 300 houses in Merak are closely clustered, increasing the risk of fire spreading, particularly during the colder months when residents rely heavily on firewood for heating. The gewog has also encouraged residents to store firewood safely away from their homes to reduce the risk. Residents say the new system has provided greater reassurance, with the strong water pressure and nearby hydrants expected to improve emergency response. The system also offers a dual benefit, as overflow from the firefighting water tank is currently being used for drinking purposes. Financially supported by the Government of India through the High Impact Community Development Projects, the initiative is expected to strengthen fire safety and protect homes and the wider community in Merak.
