In order to discuss a possible collaboration, two senior representatives from TikTok’s South Asia branch traveled to Bhutan from January 7 to 9. Facilitated by the Bhutan Information, Communication, and Media Authority, the visit’s main objectives were to promote cooperation, comprehend TikTok’s business model, and offer recommendations for the regulation of TikTok users in Bhutan. Ferdous Al Mottakin and Gautam Vohra, two TikTok representatives, discussed the platform’s development during the visit. Establishing a cooperation with TikTok and offering the required information for the facilitation and regulation of Bhutanese TikTok users was the visit’s main goal. The conversations focused on TikTok’s approach to content moderation, which filters content using AI and machine learning before human moderators examine information that has been flagged.
Concerns over TikTok’s content have been voiced by the BICMA who noted that complaints are frequent. TikTok and the BICMA intend to work together to advance digital transformation in Bhutan. In order to guarantee adherence to regional regulations and law enforcement, the Nepali government registered TikTok last year. In Bhutan, however, no decision has been taken on a comparable registration. To talk about creating safe online spaces and preventing abuse by criminals and human traffickers, TikTok representatives met with a range of partners.
