The celebrations for New Year 2083 BS, also known as Baisakh Sankranti, began early this morning with citizens visiting temples, chanting hymns, and participating in community gatherings. As one of the oldest scientifically grounded calendars determined by solar movement, the Bikram Sambat New Year is a significant moment for reflection and the setting of new resolutions for Nepali communities both at home and abroad.
In a televised address to the nation, President Ramchandra Paudel extended his heartfelt greetings for peace, prosperity, and health. The president emphasized that the New Year is a vital opportunity for Nepalis to align on common national goals. Reflecting on the recently concluded House of Representatives elections, he noted that the people’s mandate clearly seeks rule of law, social justice, and a stable federal democratic republic. He urged every citizen to place sovereignty and public welfare at the heart of their actions.
Adding to the festive spirit, Vice President Ramsahay Prasad Yadav highlighted the importance of discipline and fraternity. He called for a collective resolve to tackle pressing modern challenges, including economic instability and climate change. The Vice President also acknowledged the diverse regional festivals occurring simultaneously, such as Judhital, Siruwa Pawani, and Biskajatra, describing them as the pillars of Nepal’s social amity and national unity.
From the traditional festivities in Kathmandu Valley to the celebrations across the Tarai-Madhes, the mood remains one of optimism. As the nation steps into 2083, the call from the country’s leadership remains clear: to turn cultural heritage into an inspiration for a more prosperous and inclusive future.
