A child safeguarding programme held in Gelephu is strengthening awareness among schoolchildren about personal safety, sexual exploitation and abuse, sexual harassment, respectful behaviour and available reporting mechanisms. Conducted on September 1, 2026, by RENEW in partnership with the Department of Surface Transport under the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, the programme was organised as part of the ACCESS Project in Bhutan. It reached 163 students—81 boys and 82 girls—aged 10 to 14 from Sherzhong Primary School, Tarathang Primary School and Norbuling Central School. At a crucial stage of physical, emotional and social development, children were encouraged to understand personal boundaries, consent, respectful relationships and how to recognise inappropriate behaviour. The programme also aimed to build their confidence to respond to unsafe situations and seek help from trusted adults when needed. The initiative comes as Gelephu advances the vision of Gelephu Mindfulness City, where human wellbeing is central to development. Beyond infrastructure, economic growth and innovation, the city’s future will also depend on how effectively it protects and supports its youngest citizens. Strengthening child safeguarding within schools and communities can help foster an environment where children learn without fear, speak without stigma and feel confident seeking support. By making child safety a shared responsibility, Gelephu can ensure that its development is measured not only by physical transformation, but also by the wellbeing, dignity and security of the generation that will shape its future.
