Buddhist nun Ani Pema Deki, formerly known as Emma Slade, has been honoured with the British Citizen Award for International Achievement in recognition of her outstanding work supporting children and young people with different abilities in Bhutan. The award, presented during the 2026 summer honours, celebrates individuals whose contributions have made a significant impact on communities beyond the United Kingdom.
Ani Pema Deki founded the UK-registered charity Opening Your Heart to Bhutan in 2015. Over the past decade, the organisation has improved access to education, healthcare, disability support and essential services for children with additional needs and vulnerable communities, particularly in rural Bhutan. She said the recognition was deeply meaningful and expressed pride in representing both Britain and Bhutan while continuing her lifelong commitment to helping others.
The award follows her remarkable 400-kilometre walk along the Trans-Bhutan Trail in 2025, which raised more than Nu 9 million for children with additional needs. The 37-day journey, stretching from Haa to Trashigang, highlighted her dedication to improving opportunities for vulnerable children across the country.
Originally from Kent, England, Emma Slade previously worked in finance before embracing Buddhist life in Bhutan, where she was ordained as Ani Pema Deki. She plans to return to Bhutan for a month of solitary retreat before continuing her charitable work and fundraising efforts in support of the country’s children and communities.
