The demands of parenting and a desire for sustainability ignited Geeta Rai’s unexpected entrepreneurial adventure in Thimphu. Driven by the pressing need for alternatives to plastic, she inherited substantial debt when she took over a closed eco-friendly bag manufacturing company in 2018 after first running a restaurant with her husband. Despite obstacles including financial strains and regulatory hurdles that resulted in a five-year closure, Geeta continued to prioritize sustainability by switching to cotton and jute as her materials. With the help of organizations and her husband’s support, she overcame obstacles, learned from her mistakes, and is currently working to rebuild her business, Gumar Bhutan, with the goal of expanding internationally. Her tale highlights the larger context of plastic usage in Bhutan and demonstrates perseverance in the face of hardship and a dedication to environmental knowledge.
