Jomotsangkha Dungkhag town in Samdrup Jongkhar is seeing cleaner surroundings after the opening of its first landfill at Jangsa. For years, waste was dumped in open pits or burned near the town, causing foul smells, an eyesore and environmental concerns. The new landfill, now operational for more than a month, has brought a more organised waste collection and disposal system, with a garbage truck transporting waste to the designated site every two weeks. Residents say the change has made waste management more convenient and improved the town’s appearance. Many households are also separating recyclable materials, while plastic and kitchen waste are sent to the landfill. The Nu 5.8 million facility was funded by Bhutan for Life and jointly implemented by the Jomotsangkha Wildlife Sanctuary and the District Administration, with Druk Green Power Corporation providing a waste compactor. Designed to serve the town for more than 20 years, the landfill is expected to provide a more sustainable solution to waste disposal and reduce the need for open dumping and burning. The initiative marks an important step towards cleaner and more environmentally responsible waste management in Jomotsangkha.
